HoldSafe and the New Wave of Hands-Free Family Protection

Four new CircleGuard features — HoldSafe, Fall Detection, the daily Still-Okay check-in, and an SMS phishing scanner — extend protection to the moments when you can't reach the screen.

Protection that doesn't depend on you tapping a button

Most safety apps assume you can reach your phone, unlock it, and tap a button in the moment of danger. The real world rarely cooperates: you're gripping your keys, you've fallen, your hands are full, or the threat is close enough that a tap would be heard. So we built a second layer of features that protect you without requiring you to do anything at all.

Here are the four we just shipped.

HoldSafe: a dead-man's switch you hold in your hand

HoldSafe is for the walk between the parking lot and the front door — the shortcut through the underpass, the stretch of empty street. You press and hold the button before you set off. As long as you keep holding, nothing happens. The moment you let go — whether because you chose to, because someone grabbed you, or because you dropped the phone — a grace-period countdown begins. A quick re-press cancels it. If you don't re-press in time, every guardian in your circle is alerted instantly with your location.

The design is deliberate: it asks for an active grip, not an active request. You don't have to decide you're in danger and then act; you have to decide you're safe and stop acting. That inversion is what makes it reliable in a genuine emergency — and it means the feature also fires if your phone is knocked from your hand and you can't get to it.

You can choose your own grace period, and the whole thing works offline: your phone queues the alert locally and syncs the moment it finds a signal, so a dead cellular patch on a dark road can't swallow it.

Fall Detection: an automatic circle alert after an impact

Falls are one of the most common reasons an older family member ends up unable to call for help. Fall Detection watches your phone's motion sensors for the signature of a real fall: a sudden acceleration spike followed by a period of stillness. If that pattern appears, CircleGuard automatically creates a high-severity incident and alerts the whole circle — no tap, no confirmation, no reaching for the screen.

It's deliberately conservative about false alarms. It needs both the impact and the stillness that follows, which is exactly the combination that means someone may be down and unable to get up. You can turn it off at any time in Settings if you prefer.

The daily "Still Okay?" check-in

Loneliness and sudden medical events share an uncomfortable feature: the people around us often don't know something is wrong until they haven't heard from someone for a worrying stretch of time. The Still-Okay check-in turns that silence into a signal.

Each day, at a time the protected member chooses, CircleGuard offers a single gentle prompt: "Still okay?" A one-tap confirmation logs a welfare record and lets the family know things are fine. If a day passes without a confirmation, CircleGuard automatically opens a high-severity incident and emails the guardians so someone can check in — not a nag, a safety net. It's especially valuable for a family member who lives alone, and it gives guardians peace of mind without anyone feeling watched.

The SMS / phishing scanner

Not every scam arrives by voice. Increasingly, fraud comes as a text — a fake delivery-fee link, a "your account is locked" message, a too-good-to-be-true prize. The SMS scanner pairs directly with our existing call analyzer: paste the message, and the AI flags whether it's phishing, names the scam type, lists the specific red flags in the text, and gives you numbered next steps.

It runs in a few seconds, and it's built around the same principle that powers our call detection: give people a fast, plain-language second opinion before they click or reply.

How they fit together

These four features round out a circle's safety net for the situations that fall outside the classic scam response:

  • HoldSafe for an active threat you can see coming.
  • Fall Detection for a medical emergency you didn't see coming and can't respond to.
  • Still-Okay for the quiet days when doing nothing would itself be a warning sign.
  • The SMS scanner for the scam that came through a screen instead of a speaker.

All four work across both Family Circles (guardian and protected-member) and Buddy Circles (peer-to-peer), and all four respect the member's control — features can be toggled in Settings, and alerts go only to the people you've already trusted.

If you haven't set up a circle yet, take two minutes to do it now. These features only work for the people you've added, and the best time to add them is before you ever need them.
