Safe Zones: Using Geofences to Watch Over Loved Ones
Geofenced safe zones turn location into meaningful alerts — arrivals, exits, and overdue check-ins — without constant tracking.
What a safe zone actually is
A safe zone is a virtual circle drawn around a real place — home, school, a relative's house, a regular walking route. When a circle member's phone crosses in or out of that circle, CircleGuard quietly logs an event and, when it matters, notifies the guardians.
This is different from constant location tracking. Instead of a persistent dot on a map, the family sees meaningful moments: a child arrived at school, a grandparent left the neighborhood, a protected member didn't come home by the expected hour.
Setting useful zones
- Start with home. A 200-meter radius around the house is enough to catch arrivals and departures.
- Add regular destinations. School, the senior center, a walking park, a relative's home.
- Adjust the radius to the place. A city block may need 100 meters; a rural property may need 500.
- Color-code them. Visual labels make the timeline scannable — home is calm, school is blue, the park is green.
What to watch for
The most useful alerts are usually not "they left home" but the absence of an expected event: a child who never arrived at school by 9 a.m., a grandparent who left the safe zone at 2 a.m. Pair safe zones with the Safe Walk check-in so a missed arrival triggers a guardian alert, not just a silent log.
Privacy by default
Safe zones only matter if people keep them on. A few rules keep them welcome in the household:
- Let members see their own zones. Transparency builds trust. No hidden boundaries.
- Share summaries, not live pings. A weekly digest of arrivals and exits is plenty for most guardians.
- Respect opt-out. Members can pause sharing at any time. A feature that can't be turned off eventually, in a moment of frustration, gets uninstalled entirely.
When an alert fires
Treat the first few alerts as practice. Confirm the family member is safe, then revisit the zone size or the expected time — false alarms shrink as the routine settles. CircleGuard logs every entry and exit so you can review a quiet timeline together, not a stream of pings.
